Hello! I have been both painting and doing carpentry as hobbies for a few years now, and I am thinking about trying to combine the two. The only picture frames I have made were for other people's art, but I really want to explore the art of framing my own paintings.

I have done a little bit of research on types of frames (matted vs floating, etc), but I am having a hard time deciding what type of frame to make for my paintings. There is definitely an art to it lol.

Does anyone have a method that they use to choose frames for art, even if its not your own art and you don't make the frame yourself?

I am so new to this I don't know where to start, and frankly the options feel overwhelming! Any thoughts or ideas would be much appreciated

I assume as you’ve mentioned matting and floating that your art is mostly on paper, so it’s more than just the frame itself you need to choose. In which case your best bet is to register on the forum in the link below, it’s U.S. based and a great resource.

"Guidelines for Great Frame Design" by Greg Perkins is a good book.
