[vintage frames]

I went to the Carmarthen Museum today because they had a 'pocket' exhibition of some Turner paintings, David Cox and Samuel Palmer.
We don't get to see many historic paintings in these here parts and if you're like me, there's always the need to re-charge the memory of what an antique frame is supposed to look like.

There were three Turner watercolours, professionally framed in modern varnished wood frames and alas, only one oil painting in a rather shabby Maratta style frame.
It may have been original but even in its day would have been considered poorly executed.

There was a big well preserved frame around a David Cox number and being a typical frame-maker, my gaze kept sliding off the artwork and onto the finish and detail of the antique frame.
After guzzling all that up, I went down stairs and there in a gereral room was a frame by one of our lads.

He's shown it already on the forum but here's it again.

In its context the frame just looks so correct.
A simple matt finish, no angry mitres showing and a carefully considered layout and presentation.

He can make a decent hand-finished frame when he wants to.
