How old is this frame?

Post by Fellows Framing »

Hello,

A client has bought an old oil painting in to be reframed. Dated 1896. Attributed to Leader but not known for sure.

I am interested to know how old roughly its frame is and what style it is ? I dont think its the original but my knowledge is very limited with old frames. Artwork was held in with panel pins.

Thanks in advance.

Its a Victorian frame in the style of a 'Sully' frame. It doesn't belong in any defined genre but is usually described as 19th cent architectural moulding frame.
The inside double gilded and wide slip is especially fine.

You are right to suggest that it is not original to the artwork. If you look at the back, there are several old fixing points where the frame was once hung in the portrait orientation.

Its a bit of a tragedy that your customer wants it re-framed. What do they think would suit it better?

All the frame needs is a bit of a clean and a touch-up around the outside.
If you do end up with it, then take it to any antique dealer who'll be more than happy to take it off your hands.

That frame would make a very easy restoration project.

The inner moulding is most likely a replacement for it's current art.
