Denoyer-Geppert map.

I've got a Denoyer-Geppert map to frame. It's pretty heavy, linen backed with card covers when folded.

Plan is to mount it onto a dark mountboard with a 10 mm border and then frame that. Map iso 110 x 87 cm.

Thinking about how many fixing points to use, hedgehog style, and what adhesive.

Anyone done one of these and have any advice?

Thx

I would window mount it, personally. Hinging onto board is too tricky with the card covers imo. I'd hinge at the top and pinwheel around to allow tor the depth of map and card covers.

Don't know what you mean by adhesive? The hedgehog technique refers to hinging work to a board using hinging tapes. If you mean what adhesive to use to fix mountboard to mountboard then EVA glue is the recommended adhesive.

I mean hinging tape to back of map. It's linen backed so not sure gummed tape will work.

I'd look at the ring holes at the top to see if you could attach it there first. The rings would probably hold the weight well.

Hedgehog method weakens the strength of the mount board so if it's heavy I'd think more about cutting a piece of mount board smaller than the map and attaching that to the back, you can then glue that mount board to the board you're using for mounting. Or you use foam board if you want more of a shadow.

Gummed tape might work if there's enough of them. But I think you'd have to test it out. But as I said, if you can hook or sew the map from the ring holes, the rest of the tape will be to stop it flapping forward rather than taking any weight.

As Justin said, one way is to frame it with a window mount.

Another way is to float it on to a darker mountboard and show the whole map with edges.
Since its such a big map, what I would do is cut six smaller sized mountboards so as to form a loose grid to cover the back of the mount.
Then I would be able to hedgehog each board to the map using Japenese tapes and Lineco neutral ph adhesive. These would be fully reversible and strong enough to grab the linen surface.

Then I would stick the assembly on to the darker backing board with EVA adhesive or raise it up a bit with 5mm foam board.
