contacting Artists.....

Morning all,

A small problem my esteemed Peers might be able to help with..... I have a framing and printing business here in sunny West Wales, business is very very good!. So an expansion of the business is underway, which involves us setting up a new Gallery in a very affluent town etc,we are 3 months away from opening, the cafe area is being built ec,which is all good news.

The bad news is that in this new building we have far more wall space for hanging and I'm really really struggling to contact any `high profile artists or their agents, despite lots of searches and 'phone call I've only had two replies.

In the present business we get "Artists" coming in by the dozen, who criticise the art hanging and then try to get me to sell theirs...usually the tat they can't off load anywhere else ....

So,after all that,my question is,how on earth do I contact the "Big" names, obviously other galleries are showing artists I'd like to represent but they not likely to hand out phone numbers to a competitor, any adive warmly welcomed.

Regrds,mike.

Try having a word with David Miller who is based in St Clears, Carmarthanshire.

Here is a link to his website:

http://www.davidmillerart.co.uk/index.htm

His art is Birds, Fish and Animals with a few landscapes so may not be the sort of thing you are looking for. Will supply you with prints (open and ltd eds). He may be prepared to do an exhibition and bring some originals. David does very well at The Game Fair, Bird Fair at Rutland Water etc.

Tell him John from Northborough Framing gave you his details. You could not ask to meet a nicer chap.

Good luck with your new venture.

John.

Hi Mike,

the FATG website has a highly sophisticated search facility which produces some 260+ results for 'artist' - could be a good place to start.

or try the NEAC which lists members contact details, other art societies such as RBSA, RP, RWS etc don't list contact details but I would guess if you see examples of the artists work and contact the society they may pass on your details to the artist.

Very generally speaking I doubt many artists will have original works in two galleries less than 40 miles apart

good luck with the expansion

Richard
