Technology developed by a new DCU campus company is to be used to help protect priceless paintings under a deal announced today.

Gas Sensor Solutions developed the technology - which measures and analyses oxygen concentration - to test packaged food and other sealed goods. Today it said it had signed up London's Tate Gallery as a customer.

GSS is commercialising technology developed at DCU's National Centre for Sensor Research to test oxygen levels in sealed packs without breaking into the pack.

The company believes the system has significant potential in the processed food market, art conservation, insulated glass, limited play DVDs, water quality and medical devices, with projected sales targets of €20m over four years.

Later today Taoiseach,(Prime Minester) Bertie Ahern will launched DCU's €9m InVent business incubation centre, which is designed to provide support for start-up biotech companies. This will include information on licensing and intellectual property rights, technology transfer and business development plans.

DCU says this will allows entrepreneurs, researchers and academics to transform academic research into successful commercial ventures.

There are currently 25 client companies employing 80 people at the facility on the DCU campus.
