Just had a customer bring in twenty assorted coins , he want`s them all mounted in a single frame.
It has got me stumped. Is there a gadget on the market that will allow me to cut small individual circles.
Or is this a job where they are just glued to mountboard. I must say that does not sound good to me.

My mount cutter only allows me to go down to about four inches.

I have used one to good effect in the past and at £6.99 it won't hurt the bank balance too much.

You can do it without apertures or adhesive, these coins are mounted with melinex 'spiders' - all you do is trace around the circle on a piece of scrap board, then add 'legs' to it - lay a sheet of melinex over that and cut the shape out by hand with an exacto knife. I make the circle ever so slightly smaller than the coin.

The legs go around and under the coin, pass through the mount and are attached on the back of it. It's very easy but a bit time consuming, especially lining 20 up!

Although I have not yet done any this way myself, I have seen coins mounted as John (Roboframer) suggests and it looks vastly more impressive than using circular cut outs in mounts.

Being able to see the thickness of the coins and any milled edges is a visually important factor.

Sorry I am being a bit thick , your idea sounds spot on but I am not familiar with Melinex and I could not get the gist of how you completed the job . Is there a chance you can explain it again to a thicko.

This is Melinex - or equivalent anyway.

It's hard to describe a practical thing - demo's are the best way - you need to attend Jim Miller's class in Vegas in a couple of weeks but I bet it's fully booked now anyway!

You 'simply' trace and cut the shape you want, but slightly smaller and with 'legs' added for attachment - so a medal mount would be a sputnik sort of shape.

Here's a thread with a photo and a diagram from the man himself - the 'legs' in the photo are already partly passed through the board.

Mind you If it was somewhere nice like the Maldives I may push the boat out.

Nah - I don't do enough of it, Jim's book is never far away - more than willing to beat my gums over it and more over a pint though!
