Framing a canvas print in a box frame

Whats the best way to mount a canvas print inside a box frame, would it be fixed to mount board or a thicker backing board and would it be glaxed or open.

Any ideas please

I'm guessing it's on canvas board and you want to float it - i.e have space around it?

That space is probably going to be mountboard for choice of colour at least, and it's going to get minging without glass - it's less 'wipe-able' than the artwork itself.

Hows about framing it and then floating it - a-la .......

The inner frame is screwed to the back mount and the contents of the inner frame are made flush with foam board so that a small amount of ATG tape can hold it in position while the screws are inserted - just gluing it is an option, but messy if it comes to taking it apart again.

The back mount is normal mountboard bonded to artbak and there's a thin card dustcover just to conceal the screws.

The inner frame is positioned by lightly scoring its inner dimensions on the back mount with a manual mountcutter.

Thank you again for your reply. If you wanted to float mount a canvas print in a similar fashion what would you bond the canvas to and what would you use to raise the canvas off the mountboard.

I wouldn't want to!

But if I had to I'd be here asking like you are - I'm not yer man for dry/wet mounting, it's a last resort for me and if artcare restore or PMA won't do it, it don't get done. However, if presented with something already bonded, and I wanted to raise it from the back board, I'd use a piece of foam board cut about 5mm smaller with the edges bevelled inwards.

I'd also consider stretching it with very very neat corners and floating that - then you have that 3-D look and can screw it in place.

As long as the canvas is reasonably thick, I would and do use PVA.
Roller it onto the foam board, let it tack off slightly and then roller the canvas onto the board.

Unfortunately if the canvas is in the thin side, then you could get the PVA seeping through, then I would not use this technique.
