that must be our essex secret bunker - but now the local itinerents have taken the sign along with lots of others and not a few man hole covers as well - so the bunker is once again secret - as are many other places in essex including the sewers!

Lincolnshire not only has a lot of scattered villages (some of which don't actually exist anymore) with weird names, but also a glut of comedians. There is a signpost not far distant
Mavis Enderby....1 3/4
Old Bollingbrooke.... 1/4
To which some wag has been at with a maker pen, adding:
To
And
The Gift of a Son
And the Highways dept has given up repainting Holton-cum-Beckering

I wish I'd had my camera

Once saw a 'WELCOME TO BRIGHTON & HOVE" sign amended to read "WELCOME TO BRIGHTON & SHOVE OFF"
There is a village in Southern Germany pronounced 'Vank' and I nearly hit a tree when I saw the sign!

I know that place, when stationed in Germany we used petrol coupons which could only be used at certain petrol stations, like BP (a few dodgy places would happily take them in exchange for servicing too) which meant REALLY cheap fuel.
Wankum, just off the autobahn, had the last BP station before the Dutch border and that's where squaddies filled their tanks (and probably a few jerrycans) to the brim.
But then the IRA found out.
