Attaching shoes

Post by YPF »

I have been given a pair of children's shoes to frame and am not sure how to attach them. Usually I get soft baby shoes and I tend to sow them on, unfortunately, these are for a toddler and are made of reasonable quality leather uppers and a hard, man-made, sole. I have done a tester with polyester strips but they do seem to stand out too much to me.

Is there another way?

Grateful for your responses.

I would use one of those high strength adhesives that you buy from Leylands, Wicks etc. They will certainly hold the shoes in place and should (may?) peel off the rubber sole if ever required, and let it dry for a good 24hrs. (I would like to know if anyone has had a shoe re-framing job! )

It would be worth letting the customer know your method, I'm sure they will be ok with it.

Thanks for that, I had been considering some form of adhesive on the sole. I need to chat this over with the customer.

may be a daft suggestion but could you screw them from the back of the frame.

Notwithstanding the thinness of the sole, I don't want to damage the shoes in any way.

I bought some "no nails ultra" the other week to stick a strip to the top of some laminate flooring by the main entrance door and it has worked perfectly despite being kicked and scuffed many times a day by customers who can't pick their feet up when they walk! - standard no nails doesn't work on none porous materials.

I like the sound of this http://www.screwfix.com/prods/22070 which is similar I think.

Does what it says on the tin!

If the shoe has any lace or pattern holes in you could try the nylon tags and tag gun that Lion sell.

If the shoes have a slight ridge where the sole joins the shoe it might be possible to fashion some sort of grip from thin bendy metal sheet - strips from an aluminium drinks can comes to mind - cut with scissors and bent - If you had these attached to a small strip of mountboard that would give you a gluable mounting point with no part of the shoe glued or damaged.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Whilst tinkering with this between other jobs I have found that really thin strips of polyester 3 or 4 mm wide from a roll of 25mm are altogether less obvious.

I keep one simple principle in mind for anything that is precious to it's owner:
If it can't be completely reversed, so that the item is in exactly the same condition as it was prior to mounting, don't do it!

I'm very pleased that you found a way to do the shoes that do them no harm.

I would have done this differently - I'd've titled the topic 'Putting The Boot In' :D

Glad you opted for an uninvasive method too - did you take a photo?

the little darling may want to put them in his cell when he is 18. being the origina grumpy old man i prefer to have NOTHING to do with children - or their ****** mothers who think the sun shines. prefer the mature generation.

The shoes are actually about 25 years old, the grown up boy now wants them framed. His mother-in-law, the customer, is not happy with the price and now wants to discuss a 'cheaper option'!

I will try to remember to take a photo if we ever agree a price and layout.

Here's a cheaper option: Sell them a picture hook, and tie the laces together.
