A friend of mine is head of the NSRI (national sea rescue institute) at V & A Waterfront in Cape Town. Last week his mother passed away and he is under a lot of stress. This evening he phoned and asked about a frame for a photo of her which he had printed for the funeral tomorrow - or should he look for a ready-made in a shop. "no ways do you buy one - I'll make it look good for tomorrow - just bring it in"
He arrived around 19:00 and left the photo - I sent a text about 20:00 that it was done and he can either fetch or my wife would take it straight to the funeral - needless to say he collected and first thing he said was "what do I owe " Well I said he cares for people on the sea in storms and needing rescue all the time so he needed to allow me to care for him by just doing the job without being paid for it. A tear or two welled up in his eyes and off he went - and damn! it felt good to do a favour like that. I love this job.
