I once gave a talk to a cleaning company about how to correctly clean pictures frames, as they had an issue about damage to art with the method (or more so the lack of a cleaning method for picture frames) they had been using to clean the picture frames.

My method of cleaning more or less as is in the video on this thread resolved the issue for them.

I spend quite a lot of time trying to mucky them up. People don't believe me when I say I buy dust for that very purpose.

Oh dear, I think that’s far too much information.

Anyway....
Never, never, never, never, never spray glass cleaner on a picture frame thats hung on the wall as it will dribble down between the glass and frame and get soaked up by the mount.
Take the frame off the wall and lay it flat first.
Unless you want the mount to get a nice blue stain all along the bottom.

Going into a tangential slash re JGFs post. (Sounds nasty)..... On the same principle NEVER put a mounted print on a wooden easel that has been treated with oil. No matter how old it is.

Don't spray the glass, horizontal or vertical, spray the cloth.

By spraying into the cloth you have control of where the liquid goes.

Bet there are not many framers who wear gloves when cleaning glass with chemicals which could be absorb into body through the skin.

Water it safer with a shamey or micro fibre cloth.

I got my wife a cleaning service for a birthday gift a few years ago. They use a furniture polish called Murphy’s Oil Soap. It is supposed to bring back the shine on wood surfaces. I guess it does, but you'd think that the name should give a tiny hint to the cleaners.

Once they are finished with the wood work, they tackle the picture frames … but they use the same stupid cloth on the glass i.e. OIL Soap (duhh!). Every time they come to clean, they are so badly smeared that I have to use glass cleaner on each and every frame.

Idiots!
