Box is two boxes made from a flat ramin profile (Simons LES 0001) joined with pocket holes. Could have used flat battens but I had this in stock anyway and it gave me a rebate at the front for the outer frame (from the Larson Juhl 'Michelangelo' range) and a rebate at the back for the mounting board, (Arqadia suedette 'cabernet') which is bonded to 3mm foam board and, once the violin is mounted on that, will be bonded to 3mm AheMDF, for strength and to fill the rebate.
I sanded off my first two attempts to match the finish on the moulding, I did match it quite well, but it looked naff over such a large flat area, you can see I tested on the inside first.
Using super soft strand wire through the bracket on one end, thought I'd be clever and put some shrink tubing over it, which I painted (not very well) to match, but as you can see, I could have just painted the wire coating ... and will.
All being well this will be completed tomorrow.

Erm ..... I overlooked the bow, or should I say the size of it - it just about squeezes in that box without the spacers.

How I laughed when I realised I'd have to start all over again!

Or you could pull the bow strings onto a nail so it looks like a bow that shoots arrows. That would shorten it a bit!

There are 5 mounting points, 2 on the violin - the wire as shown in first post and a Meinex strap under the scroll, and 3 melinex straps on the bow, the flash caught the centre one.

The final fitting has yet to be done - flumb and glass smear NIGHTMARE! Wish my framer luck tomorrow, I'll be in Alderney until Sunday.
Copious amounts of 5mm foam board strips before the final ones. lined with the same suedette board were fitted in to the outer frame rebate.

There was no need to bond the MDF to the mounting boards, which is good, because if ever this needs to be undone the MDF will lift away and then the exposed wire/melinex can be simply snipped/cut and (with a bit of tuning maybe) it's all ready to play Vivaldi's 'Spring'

I bought this one from amazon plus a face clamp, it comes with one but it's not very big.

I once left a certain SatNav on my favourites on the web(one I really wanted),when santa came I rec'd a satnav but not the one I 'really' wanted.So hints sometimes work,but I find if its a specific make model you want,buy it yourself,then you can't blame anyone else.

Thats just the tool I need when I have to make boxes of 5 or more inches deep as I have to frame lots of boxing gloves.

Robo have you tried a 6inch Foam roller on your flat box section finishes, they can give a really good finish and cheap as chips.
Violin looks great,how long did it take and what did you charge if you don't mind me asking.

May have to be careful as the stains can melts some foam with spirit based products better to use a water based quick drying product.

I have made a few wired brackets with wire and shrink tubing for large objects, you can bend them into shape and cover with shrink tubing (shrink with a hot air gun, you can also warm the wire to make it easier to shape) and push through your mountboard insert into a 5mm foam board or a plastic flutted board and seal it into the board with 2 part eproxy resin to make a stirdy bracket that's base is embebbed in resin in the board.

The the object can be clipped in and out as required, lets say your violin needed to be played at some point then this method would work and you could soon make a frame and glass door.

Do you ever use barrel hinges on door frames?

I do have mini foam rollers and the 'mop' type too; I used a sponge applicator for the base stain.

I didn't time it, but hands on and forgetting the balls up, no more than a couple of hours. Making and finishing (without drying time) the box took the longest, after that it's quite simple, mounting the violin/bow was faster than lacing an average piece of needlework.

The wired brackets you refer to are also known as 'formed rods' and there's some great step by steps in Jim Millers book - including a violin.

I've never made a hinged door - plenty of slip-over frames though.
