morso blades

Post by chickon »

Hey there,.,.,I'm just trying to work out whether it's worth buying second hand blades. A pair with apparently 20 sharpenings left just went for £36 on ebay which is about a sixth of the new price. My question is will a new pair have significantly more than 180 sharpenings before they are dead? I don't really want to spend £200 on blades, but if it means I'm going to get a helluva lot more out of them it'll be worth it. I know it depends on what wood is being cut etc, I'm just looking for a rough guess (or opinions) if anyone can offer one :) cheers

I'd say for £36 they are worth a punt. As long as they have a bit of meat left on them you could get another 10 years out of them. Even if they had a chip or two and needed a extra re-grinding. :D I've had 2 sets for 25+ years and they don't seem to have shrunk much.

If they had much useful life left in them I don't think they would have been on ebay.

I would buy new and know what you are getting.

I brought those blades as i couldn't afford the £200 for new set. What i could afford was £45 for a spare pair that are kept sharp to one side just in case.
This is my new live within my means strategy !

cool, thanks. I think I'll put off paying 200 untill I'm feeling super-rich! To be fair 20 sharpenings is a fair amount of time. And Jonny I know what you mean, when I've had a look at the enlarged images of blades on ebay they have suspiciously little metal left on them! cheers
