Alderney
Alderney
The photos may take some time to upload - not my fault, the forum automatically re-sizes things now and these are large files, I'll save any future ones as 800x600 but with these you can zoom in for serious detail! This place is less than 1 hr 40 mins (car and plane - actual travelling time) from where I live, but, like, totally another world!
This was our hotel, the only hotel on the island with any stars, but they are well deserved! Our bathroom window is the small central one and our room balcony is to its right. View from balcony. Rock full of gannets and some serious rip tides.

Hope you both have a great time John.
There are 743 gannets on that rock btw.

Re: Alderney
Looks like a nice place to visit.
Was it expensive and was the food good?
Looks like it would have been good for a spot of sea fishing.
Can you spot the where's wolly Gannet

Re: Alderney
It was very reasonable 4 nights B&B (superb breakfast choice too) 2 or 3 course dinner (posh grub like wot you see on masterchef!) on 3 nights plus a few bar drinks, hot drinks and phone calls - £770 for the two of us and no VAT of course. Here's the hotel website. http://www.brayebeach.com/
Plenty of other places to eat, the short road that this hotel is on alone has two restaurants and two pubs, one of which does good food.
Flights were £158 each return, which isn't that cheap for a 40 min flight in this noise bucket.
There's some sort of problem with the fishing, the fishing tackle shop owner is up in arms about it.

Looks like a nice place, John. I trust you both had a relaxing weekend there.
The problem with the fishing might be that the 743 birds have eaten all the fish leaving none for fishermen.
That's a strange looking plane. The extra engine at the back looks like it's been stuck on at the last minute, because the others weren't powerful enough.

This is the non-zoomed-in gannet rocks, I've reduced it to 1000x1777 pixels so it should upload a bit faster. Quite like this one and have printed it out to mount and frame, if I sell about 12 of them it should cover the trip

Re: Alderney
Nice Photo's I like the gullable chap.
Might take a short trip there oneday, Hotel looks good, I'll see if you can fly from Norwich
Flew to Holland in a small plane last year only took half an hour from Norwich Mrs was not impressed, no time to get a drink
I love good food, when I go cruising I travel with Princes Cruises and the food is fantasic.
This year I am traveling with Travelsphere to Italy they have also been a very reliable firm with good service and there Reps have been fantastic as they live in the countries even thou there are British. Last year I travelled with them to Austria and stayed in a castle in the Terral fantasic also went to Hitlers hill top retreat.
Glad you had a good time.

Re: Alderney
You can only fly direct (with Aurigny - pron "Oreeny") from Southampton, otherwise it's via Guernsey, maybe Jersey as well.
I love good food too, but I'm not fussed about it looking better than most things I get to frame! I mean, vegetables cut in cylinders (probably with an apple corer) and stood on end so's you don't actually know what they are until you taste them, and then have to guess from the menu - what's all that about FFS!
Alderney is like going back in time, but be quick - really, because it's looking like it's going to become like parts of (e.g.) Cornwall - summer residences, 'them and us' etc.
It was a favourite haunt of my wife's in a previous life when she ran an international haulage company (with her late first husband
), she'd charter a highlander and take a wolfhound or two along, so a bit of a nostalgic trip for her. She/we got chatting with locals who could relate to the times when she knew the place - like the hairdesser that does B&B 'on the side'. Not any more, they want business rates (etc) and the 3 or 4 bookings that she has committed to this summer will actually cost her money, so that will be the end of that. 200 houses up for sale .... etc.

Re: Alderney
Just out of interest - did the island have a Framing business that you saw?
Youth and experience are no match for age and treachery...
Re: Alderney
Definitely not in any retail premises but there was a small ad in the island's journal, with a population of just 2400 it could only be a sideline.
Re: Alderney
I didn't realise Alderney was so close to France until I looked at it on Google Earth.
I wonder what the deal is with the location in France (marked) that is fuzzed out and not as detailed as the area around it?

Joy! I sold this today and it won't take 12 to cover the trip if I can sell enough at the same price.Roboframer wrote: Quite like this one and have printed it out to mount and frame, if I sell about 12 of them it should cover the trip
Image size 11x6"
Glass size 18.75x13"
Artglass UV (yes, photo taken with glass in and spotlights on it)
Alphamat artcare board.
Moulding from Ashworth & Thompson
Mount slip from Nielsen.
Have a stab at the price .... you'll have to use some imagination if you don't recognise the moulding and mount slip because I don't think it's a good idea to quote trade prices outside of members only.
