Morso Chopper Problems

Post by driftwoodwv »

Anyone have advice on why changing blades on a Morso Chopper would cause the cuts to be out of square?

The old blades cut square. The newly sharpened ones did not. So I sent the old blades out for sharpening. Now they don't cut square either.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Oo-er, that's a new one on me! The blades can only move vertically, so can their housings.

Maybe the blades were REALLY blunt and were pushing mouldings apart as well as cutting through.

I'd adjust the fence, just the left hand one, INTO the error - if the gap is at the front of the join (the inside of the frame) move it forward, if it's at the back, move it towards you - fractionally, the adjustment is multiplied four times.

I do this using a 4" wide pine batten.

New one on me too!!

Not quite sure on what you mean by 'out of square'. Do you mean the vertical cut is not cutting at 90 degrees?

Although one point: Make sure that there is no debris/dust between the mating surfaces of the Blade and the main housing.

I would be really interested in your findings.

Thanks for the input.

I "cheated" by moving the fences forward a fraction. This worked for the small 1.25" rectangular moulding I was working with . . . All four corners were tight. But once I swithed to a larger different profile molding, the corners were off again.

The following is the response I received from the "Official" U.S. Representatives for Morso.

I am going to send the blades out to them to see if this fixes the problem.

We received your name and e-mail address from Dan-List Maskinfabrik, manufacturers of the MORSO Chopper. We understand that you are having some trouble with your cuts.

Although you have used a professional sharpening service, it is possible that they have not ground your blades to the manufacturer's specifications. We don't like to "strong-arm" people into using our sharpening service if there is a local company who can do a good job. However, if the blades are not sharpened correctly, it causes a lot of frustration to the operator -- as I'm sure you have discovered.

One way to check the grind is to take the set that is not on the machine and do a quick test. Take a credit card and hold the edge of the card up the beveled edge of the knife. If the card sits flush against the bevel, this is evidence that the blades have been flat ground. You should be able to see a bit of light -- or a slight curvature -- between the straight edge and the knife. This indicates that they have been "Hollow Ground," which is the appropriate way to sharpen the knives.

The hollow grind allows just enough "give" to allow the waste piece to move out of the way and enables the head to travel upwards freely.

When knives are flat ground, they tend to create a wedge between the moulding, knife and waste piece. The number one symptom is chipping on the back edge. In the long run, though, you'll also experience a lot of unnecessary wear and tear on your knives, foot pedal, etc.

We would certainly welcome the opportunity to sharpen your knives. We currently sharpen for customers in 48 US States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. Standard sharpening costs $25 per set. It may be that you will require a corrective sharpening to get the right angle back into the knives. This is $50, but then it goes back to $25 when you send them in again.

I hope you've found this information helpful.
