I'm looking for a trade suppplier of A4 and 6" x 4" box frames or similar.

I wanted to insert my own A4 bespoke mounts, but not sure if you can insert mounts into a box frame if they are the same size as the frame. I had these made ages ago, but realised I wanted to use a box frame instead...Is this possible?

If not, would it be worth buying a deep frame, and get a slightly larger backing board, and attach the backing board to frame edges...this sounds the most apporpraite way in order to get the depth, whilst allowing me to insert a mount aswell. What are the best methods of attaching a backing board this way, but still allowing people to remove the backing board to add say a picture? I was thinking about screwing it on, but it seems a bit impractical and time consuming.

Is there anywhere to get backing board cut to size in the UK? Also preferably require a coloured backing board like black.

I'm there are any number of framers on the Forum who would happily knock you out as many box frames as you need. Any size.

There are certain mouldings (not a huge selection) that have a double rebate so you can fit the backs the same way as a normal frame and still maintain the depth. All depends how much clearance you need between the glass and back. The usual method with box frames is to use a deep spacer that leaves just enough room in the rebate to the get the back in . Glass/Spacer/Back. You can get lots of deep mouldings with complimentary spacers.

You can fix the backs to the outside back of the frame, but as you say, you would have to screw it and you would need a wide moulding to do this satisfactorily. Even then it's a PITA and you would need to use plywood.

The only rigid black board that I know of and is easily available is foamcore. You could paint a wood back, but - extra messy work.

Hi daveym, it would be helpful if you stated the depth you require. This is a normal frame I've just done for someone who does scrabble letters to give as a wedding present with the back screwed on. Basically in goes the glass, drop in the mount and cut strips of mountboard the width of the depth of what is left on the inside of the frame and stick it around the inside. Then screw on the back. To get a black back you could just glue a piece of black mountboard onto the mdf back (same size). You would probably have to thicken the mountboard strips by gluing two or three together to hold the glass properly. With relatively shallow 'box' frames like this the spacer strips don't show so I'm not fussy about neatness. I've always used 6mm fillet tape to stick the spacer strips to the inside of the frame.
BTW My last few reels of fillet tape I bought on ebay. Went on ebay today to get some more. Typed in 'fillet tape" but there isn't any listed at present. Did get "fashion tape boob body t*t enhancer fillet" come up.
