Touching up painted mouldings

Hi all,

Have just made a mess of a painted moulding so thought I'd seek some urgent advice.

My question is simply what's the best approach to touching up a moulding with a painted finish that isn't a straightforward black/white/gold/silver?

The weirder the finish the easier to touch up. It's the dead flat colours that are next to impossible to touch up convincingly. I had a white frame last week with a few very minor dings/scrapes on it. Ended up repainting the whole frame. Give me a mottley finish any day.

Artists' acrylic paints are probably the best for the job. It does take a bit of practice to get the best results however.

You're not wrong about teh flat finishes. Colour matching with paint is almost impossible - you might get close in one light, in another it looks way off. Then the sheen might seem wrong. Both of which have just happened to me.

So I'm going to reorder the moulding and make it again. But assuming there might be a bit of touching up to be done, what do you think is the best strategy?
