i have just made a few natural ash frames - i like the look of them - can i get away without applying a finish and if i need to - what is the simplest to use whilst maintaining the natural appearance

A quick sand to take off the sharp edges. Apply clear wax and buff it up.

A coat of Shellac (French Polish) first will give it a bit extra sheen. Can shift the colour though unless you use the refined grade.

To bring out the grain more, use a coloured wax.

Leaving it raw risks picking up dirt and fingerprints over time.

I use Liberon Black Bison Wax in neutral shade after a light sanding which does not have much effect on the colour.

Use Clear shade if you want to impart a slight yellow finish. The other shades e.g. dark oak with darken and fill the grain.

Then you can stain it, lime it, stain and lime etc. If you have some spare pieces why not experiment.

I've just done this one in Ash with Liberon Black wax: It looks a bit too brown in the pictures but it seems to match the character of the print pretty well.

This is the reframe mentioned in another recent thread, the 6 Kg jobbie that fell off the wall after one of the 9mm screws wrenched out.
