Radio ads

Post by Roboframer »

Here's our latest ads - I normally write them (and then they cut it down from 2 hours to 30 seconds along the same lines!) but this time I let them use a production company. We like 'em - how about you?

It's impossible to monitor really, we advertised on Spirt FM for 8 or 9 years continuous on a 'brand builder' scheme. You pay for 90 thirty second ads a month with a % guaranteed to be in prime time. In addition to that they throw in unsold air time, split between those on the scheme; we typically got about 230 ads per month!

Previous to that we had a month here and there and saw little effect, but after a few months on the scheme we started seeing more new faces and got busier and busier. Many mentioned the radio ad, but of course not everyone does. To help us monitor it we asked for an ad saying that if any new customer mentoned it they'd get a discount etc, but the station wouldn't do it.

Spirit has a huge coverage area, but it's mainly to our West and the largest town (city) is Chichester, 17 miles away, and much of it is the South Downs, a load of sheep.

We switched to Splash FM early this year, they have a much smaller coverage area to our East (our actual village is on the extremities of each station's coverage) but it includes Worthing which is only 5 miles away and we've seen a big increase in new faces and sales - again with many mentioning the ad.

Up until now it's been a single and pretty mundane ad, but now we are on a similar scheme to Spirit's 'brand builder' with three ads - they only have new sign-ups once a year - September - you have to attend a presentation with some suit banging on about how wonderful radio is - and sure it is as long as it's BBC radio 2 or 6 music (no bloody adverts!) - I fell asleep.

Because of the smaller coverage area (we were on two transmitters with Spirit) we are paying almost half of what we used to pay and it seems, even with the mundane ad (these only started this Monday) that we are getting better results. These should stick in peoples' minds more - that's what we've found - forget banging on about what you do and how wonderful you are, there isn't time! Just have something quirky, love it or hate it, they'll remember it.

We've been advertising on Nevis radio fior about 15 months now. It gets embarrasing when people can quote our ad word for word when they meet us  We also get a reaction when we say in shops etc that we are the local picture framers "oh! you're the woman from the radio". A lot of it is about getting awareness there is a GCF in the Fort william area and we have had some people phone Nevis Radio to find the number because they didn't write it down quickly enough. We put a discount code in the advert (and all the others) to find out which advertising is successful, but people tend not to quote them.
