Silver War Badge http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silver_War_Badge (worth reading as it includes the twenty-nine different ways in which someone could have been discharged under the King's Regulations) plus an unusual memento of his wounds - A pin made from the stainless steel used to join the bones of his left arm W for William.
