Self Adhesive mountboard

Post by pramsay13 »

I only use this sparingly, and I was brought a poster which had been rolled up, squished in a pocket, left in a drawer underneath something for a few years etc. etc.
The customer wasn't hopeful that anything could be done, but I said I would try this self-adhesive mountboard from DR.
Once it was done it looked very good and he was extremely pleased.
Unfortunately he's now back after 3 months with it, as there are some large bubbles / lines down it where it has come away from sticky backing.
He's not being critical as he thought it was a goner, and it still looks fine from a distance, but he was wondering if anything can be done.
Any ideas?
I don't have any mounting equipment although could send it out if that would be an option.

With this method the bond relies on pressure. How did you smooth it down> With a hand roller?
The problem is that you can't get even pressure this way. In some places it will have bonded better than others, hence the localised bubbles. What's worse is that you generally can't flatten the bubbles out even if the board is still sticky. If you do you'll likely find that you get a very hard half-moon crease due to the paper being bigger in area in the bump than the area it came from. Not a lot - but enough. Even if you could de-mount the whole thing satisfactorily, flattening it would be a job for a restorer. Hardly worth it on a typical poster.

I wouldn't contemplate using s/a board on anything larger than a smallish photo - 10x8 max. Less paper to wriggle about and easier to get hard pressure on.

Thanks Prospero, yep just a hand roller.
It doesn't seem to be still sticky under the bubbles as though the adhesive covering has come away from the board.
I have used it before for smaller items without any issues, but that was by far the biggest, and in the worst shape.

Self adhesive mount board needs cold rollers to get enough pressure IMHO. Also once the glue has been exposed to air it won't stick I believe. I have put them in a hot press before now but you do run the risk of it creasing.
