Advice Please--- Just got an oil painting in to reframe 3'x2' the customer wants it double mounted & behind glass & I'm looking for the best way to do this, its victorian & nailed onto the stretcher bars then nailed into the frame, I was thinking of taking it off the stretcher bars & mounting it as i would a normal Print or Watercolour but stitching it onto the under mount to keep it in place anybody done this before & how did you do it.

Keep it on the stretcher, cut your mount, then cut foamcore the correct depth(same depth as canvas) and a bit bigger than mount size. Place mount on top of oil then slide the foamcore slices in(with some d/s tape/pva, then simply trim off the excess foamcore . This effectively will give you a deep rebated mount that will allow you to mount the oil without any actual fixings/tape on it

I've done what you describe (Ricky) many times - with the customer happy that it may not lie perfectly flat. If that's OK it won't require a deep rebated frame or any extra flush-making materials/time.
