Glass size/thickness

I've made several quite large frames lately- c. 1000 x 700, and used 2mm glass. They have been in a substantial (72 mm) moulding, so it all seems pretty stable. I'd appreciate advice on the point size wise at which I should I start to consider thicker glass

Up to about 10 sq ft for me - e.g. 36x40" - but it depends ......

If that was in a frame with just a spacer, or an inner frame - i.e. there's a big air space under most of the area, I'd consider 2mm unsafe.

Anything I couldn't get from a full 48x36" sheet would also not be 2mm, e.g. a long piece, like 56x20" is under 8 sq ft but I don't want to know about stocking the larger (72x48"??) sheets that 2mm comes in, or having it cut to size for me, and anything that long warrants more then 2mm anyway IMHO.

37x38" is also less than 10 sq ft, but can't be got out of a full sheet, so again, not 2mm for me.

But I wouldn't go to 3mm glass, or any glass at all - it's too heavy and not easy to handle, especially when flipping over to clean the other side. I go to acrylic.

Thank you - a good guide that should keep me right on most things I want to do. 4 x 3 x 2mm glass is frightening enough, I just can't imagine trying to do anything with six feet of the stuff.

I always have 10 sheets of it in the workshop. but it is a pita to use.
