Can anyone recommend a place to get gilding training. So far I've come across Jan Pike, and an evening class at the Working Mans College in London. Grateful for any leads.
thanks!

I can't recommend one, but if you find a good one could you please let me know? I'm interested in learning. Am based in South East London, so probably looking in a similar catchment area to yourself.
Regards
Jon

This is a good website for some instructions and recipes:
http://www.watergild.com/index.html
They also offer a gilding course.
Jan Pike did a workshop at the last Lion event so maybe someone who attended will let you know about this?
You could also try Pierre Lafrance:

The Fine Art Trade Guild website may have some gilding trainers listed.
There is an online gilding course on Youtube:

I did go to Jan Pike's gilding workshop at Lion, I assume it was the most recent one. It was just the afternoon but it was really excellent, came away with a couple of gilded chevrons, both water gilded and oil gilded. She managed to fit a lot into 3 hours. The chevrons were pre-prepared though so practically I'm none the wiser to gesso and rabbit skin glue preparations, but she went through all the theory. I can thoroughly recommend her as a teacher, for you especially as I believe she holds them in London.
I also went to a workshop with a local framer and it was absolute rubbish, didn't know what was going on. I won't recommend them.
Those are some good links Framemaker, hopefully they'll help me on my way to gilding competence.

An artist came in today wanting some barewood frames to take on a gilding course in August:

Although the course is aimed at artists, the content sounds like a good introduction to gilding and hand finished frames. It certainly seems to be the closest to a course for making contemporary gilded and painted frames that I have seen so far.

What a bargain £175 for five days tuition. Could be interested myself!
