The Framers Forum

I'm being deliberately confrontational here, but didn't this forum used to be a lot livelier.

I'm sure it used to be crammed full of people willing to freely give their opinions and advice. Nowadays a post or two in a day and that seems to be that.

Posts used to be full of photos of things others had done, with detailed write ups and sketches.

I'm sure I will be properly corrected, but I miss the good old days, or is it just the rose tinted lenses of advancing old age?

A good subject for discussion.

I think that the answer would be that things vary from time to time. At some point more start up framers will take the plunge and will start asking questions and a whole new phase will begin again, but that depends upon the economy and who knows what else.

Many who used to contribute a lot more are getting worked off their feet right now and added to that there are a few less framers still trading at this point in the recession, so it's a little less busy.

Also as the forum has been running for a few years now and there is a wealth of subject matter in earlier posts, many can search these earlier posts for the information which they need, instead of asking on the forum.

It's also smack in the middle of holiday time and maybe people didn't take their iPads with them, plus of course the olympics which do sap a lot of viewing time to catch up after "a day at mill".

On this topic though, we were just saying earlier today that we haven't seen Jim Anderson since June. Anyone seen him since?

There's a letter in ABT from Jim saying farewell to the trade.

Now I am surprised at that John. Not being able to see the previous copy (it's not in current copy) did he say why and what he was going to do?

It is in the current copy (August) but not in the letters section, which would be the obvious place to look after I said it was a 'letter'

I was sorry to hear that Jim has moved onto pastures new, I found him a very agreeable chap, happy to pass on his business knowledge/expertise and enjoyed a couple of his seminars. I can only wish him well in his future endeavours.

Back to the programme ..... the forum's still a lively place, it may have been more lively and it may become as lively again or even morso.

'After hours' went through a very active social phase and the forum in general did too in the days of the Mogster and some others, then there was a 'shoutbox' that was also very active for a while.

People come and go and at times there's a large proportion of prolific posters and at other times, there's not. Be they reply-ers or thread-starters.

Many of the multi-page topics in 'the good old days' were controversial - FATG & supplier bashing, not to mention member(s)-to-member(s) fisticuffs - but mostly FATG - all that sort of stuff seems to have mellowed now and the last supplier-bashing topic (that I remember anyway) was self-moderated by forum members.

If you (no-one in particular) want to liven up the place, tell and/or show us what you've been up to, framing-related or not.

Yeah. The After Hours section has been a bit quiet of late. Maybe all the FF framers are just to knackered after slaving over a hot Morso all day.

I'm going to start a thread and anyone who doesn't join in will be officially designated a miserable git.

Nice to see a bit of life on this thread, great to have a few puns here and there, and finally a big relief I didn't get hung, drawn and quartered.

This isn't for humanitarian reasons. It's just someone has to clean up the mess.

I obviously don't know FF from 'the-old-days, having just joined relatively recently, but I must admit that to me it seems very lively.
I was a structural engineer prior to my strokes, and the suggestion that fellow engineers meet in 'Forum-Mode' and help one another out/offer advice(freely )/update on projects~work commissions, is laughable in the extreme.
Many of you have helped me enormously and given of your time and expertise to help me develop my framing techniques/skills.
And I appreciate it sincerely.
OK, some days I log-in and it's quiet. So I feel guilty that you lot are probably working, whilst I'm sitting in front of my PC with a nice cup of tea. Not very guilty, you understand, but ........
Other days, it's buzzing.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that I'd be lost without FF - but I'd certainly miss it.

I like to encourage more framers to take up handfinishing and I'm planning on doing some hand finishing photos and some wrapped deep bevel mount photos before long, so that might liven things up a little.

All I need is the time to do it!

Hi All

I am not too older forum member but still here.

Looking forward to seeing you all at the Framers Forum bit of a do. I will be staying for the meal, so sorry about the table manners in advance.

Still a small time framer with a couple of new ways to present a sports shirt to which I would like to share, but I struggle with the picture upload so that in itself puts me off.

I thought about a new post on framing injury as on the eve of my holiday I spliced the tip of my finger off. I was looking forward to the old war wound story, but the 'bloody' thing healed invisibly. I now get the 'Mick' taken out of me - oh can I say that? I am from Irish decent so I belive I have the right! Anyway they make fun of me and now call me Dave Allen.

I used to enjoy the cut and thrust of this forum, but like everything in life these days, the politically correct police will get you. I think the forum has lost it's edge a wee bit and for me I am sure, this has reduced my contribution to the forum considerably.

It would be good if every one allied to this forum just posted 'YES' to extend this post. We can then see just how many are out there even on the fringe, watching rather than contributing. Come on just post "YES' and let's count how many we can get out of the woodwork?

A good response, may get John 'Mr Forum himself, get the wine in again at the Forum dinner.

The loss of Moglet and the excentric guy with the £150 brown and white brogues, also Mike the very nice Welsh chap through bereavement is all very sad. Obviously anyone else who I have missed out and deserve a mention, - all the very best to you where ever you may be.

Below the reply box click 'browse' in the 'upload attachment' bit - that will take you to your puter files. Select where you've got the photo you want ('My pictures' probably) -click on the photo and, well ...just follow the instructions really. The forum automatically downsizes the photos, but it really speeds things up if you do that first. 800x600 pixels is good. Have a nice day.
