Antique sampler.

Post by David McCormack »

A customer is bringing this in (I've not seen it yet, image is from ebay) size is around 59 by 52 cm.

Any ideas on how to mount it?

I don't think there is enough material to lace it in the usual way and, as it is around 150 years old, I don't fancy lacing with too much tension. I've heard about using donor material when the edges are fragile, can anyone explain this technique please.

I think it will be framed without a mount, but probably with slips to space away from the glass.

Thanks.

Others will advise but I'd be tempted to use overlay mounting as described to me by members of this forum.

How about covering some foamcore with velvet - leaving say 1" border and carefully stitching it. A sort of float mount. These things are very fragile. What you have to avoid is applying tension. The velvet would tend to grip it to some extent so minimal stitches would be necessary. Would also make a nice background.

Fine mesh fabrics such as tulle or stabiltex can be used in a similar way to a melinex overlay on to artcare board.

That's another fine mesh you've got me in to.
