Help with a moulding - Again!

Post by birdman »

We have been asked to try and match a moulding for a customer, the local Masonic Hall. They have a series of frames showing their members over the years so it is a traditional moulding. The photo gives you an idea of what it looks like and surrounds a photo from 1982. A match would be great but otherwise something similar that would not look too out of place.

It is 36mm wide, 33mm deep and has a rebate of about 15mm.

I have checked our Arqadia and Simon's catalogues, and the Mainline website but haven't found anything myself yet, but there are none so blind as can't see so I'm happy to be corrected :-)

Have you tried looking at Ashworth & Thompson?

Hi J2M,

Yes I had thought about them but we don't have an up to date catalogue. So I have emailed the rep in Belfast and hopefully he will respond soon.

I know it' very hard to tell just looking at a photo and I could easily be wrong, but having used the zoom facility on my web browser to take a closer look at the chipped edge at the mitre and the way the the gold sight edge transitions into the wood grain finish, I'm wondering if could this be a polymer moulding?

I'm thinking that the wood grain and the gold sight edge may have been applied as a single foiled finish.

If the moulding is the same vintage as the photo then it could be on Ramin. Looks nice quality. Brown mouldings in them days were a lot better than today's typical stuff. The sight edge looks a lot like an A&T moulding I used to use a lot of until they switched wood. Different shape, but the finish is very similar. If it does date from those far-off days then finding a match is going to be very difficult.

Thanks Mark and Peter,

The moulding probably is Ramin, it is definitely not polymer. A few people have now mentioned A&T and if I don't hear back from the rep on Monday I'll try giving Phil a call.

Matching is probably not very likely, but something similar in width and depth of rebate would be handy. As a fall back they would be happy with Mahogany and Gold but I haven't found one to fit the bill yet, mostly all the rebates are too small.

Rolf

Alec thinks it is Simons 0469/0280 which is on page 65 of the current catalogue. Used to use it at his previous employers, never liked it. Colour would change every batch which is why the catalogue one looks darker than your picture presumably. Would be right for the age of the one you have too. It wasn't one of his favourites :giggle:

Might be worth getting a sample of it to check.

Thanks Jo and Alec,

I will ask but I think it is too wide and the rebate doesn't look deep enough. In colour, the moulding I am looking for is probably closer to the 00CA/0989 on page 66, which is the correct width but again the rebate is too small. My photo makes it look wider than it actually is at 36mm width.

Cheers.
