A forum announcement was made a while back about an iPad app that did exactly as you require. However althought the link no longer works, it looks like the app (called Frame Up) may be available for downloaded from the Apple App Store.

Dave, I would think that just about any decent photo editor would serve your purpose. Probably the features you need most would be guidelines, layers, and the ability to drag the images and position them at will. Certainly Photoshop would be up to the job, but there are quite a few similar but free applications that would have the functionality that you require.

Google - open source and free alternatives to Adobe Photoshop.

if all you want to do is figure out

then excel will do the job

make all the cells square. then create some boxes in the correct ratios and lay them out

In the time this thread has been going, you could have worked it out on paper, draw out the wall to scale, then cut a load of little bits of paper to the scale size of all the pictures and play around with arrangment, that's the way we would have done it in the good olds days without computers. :xcomputer:

Not sure if this helps but Snapfish do photo collages.

One of my photographer customers uses their templates to show customers and then gets them professionally printed by a decent lab. Apparently you can keep shuffling the images around until you get the one you like most which you can then save.

The collage feature in Google's Picasa is pretty nifty also, and quite intuitive.
