Water gilding metal leaf

Now, I always thought it wasn't possible to water gild with metal leaf, but apparently Larsen-Juhl Senelar mouldings are done that way. Has anyone had experience of doing this? Also, if anyone could recommend a particularly good supplier of metal leaf, that would be great. As much as I love real gold leaf, I just can't afford it for the big frames I make for myself.

Thanks Ally,
Well, I've done a small test piece, and it seems to work well (and even burnishes to a nice shine). So why do all the books say it's not possible?

Metal leaf can be done as gold leaf. The difference is that the "gilders liquor" has to be stronger, having a little more RSG in the water.
