Re: Pricing help
Looking at this quickly, most/all of your margin is labour. I have low(ish) labour and make margin on the markup on materials. It is a balance; your method I would suggest makes you expensive on small jobs and cheap on bigger jobs which is what your pricing is showing. Waste is also make or break fo...

Re: Space saving/organization hacks for workshop
Hi, I notice you are in Cape Town so uncertain what the wholesalers setup is there but I would consider if it is an option buying everything on a chop. No moulding waste, no storage, clean and easy

Wood staining advice required
I don't stain many frames and in the past haven't had any issues, but I'm trying to stain an oak veneered frame using Chestnut Spirit stain. I have tried applying with a cloth and the wet stain on the cloth dissolves the previous layer of stain, you can feel it go sticky and wiping it away causing a...

Re: Glass vs Acrylic
If Centrado does deliver in their own vans then sounds like the solution, I have found that glass merchants are too expensive for 2mm, maybe because pretty much all the picture framing wholesalers buy is 2mm it is more competitive. I would use glass as it is what the customer expects, otherwise ever...

Re: Do you all use some kind of software?
I use BBEst, I did trial FramR and thought it was better, the GUI is more 'modern' but I didn't want to pay subscription forever. So opted for BBEst and a once only payment

Re: Morso Chopper Issues
Hi, in your OP you mention that you have replaced the blades, is this 'I have fitted a brand new genuine pair of Morso blades' or 'I have tried another pair of blades I had to hand' ? IMO I don't think you can easily progress these sort of issues without fitting new blades. I have 3 sets of blades, ...

Re: Morso Chopper Issues
If you chop a square section moulding very close to the end there will remain a flat section, look to see if it is parallel. If it isn't then it's a chop problem, if it is then an assembly issue

Re: Deposit dilemma....
Hi, you mention that you generally like to be paid at the end so you fund all the materials and are reimbursed on collection and that works fine for you as you have the cash or credit to do that. This job you have received £2.5k and have currently spent £2k on materials so are £500 better off at thi...

Re: Deposit dilemma....
I would just deduct each job from the £2.5k, in the months you did jobs I would send a statement of the balance remaining, if it goes well and the balance gets towards zero ask for a top up

Re: Waiting for Hoffmann
Hi, pretty much as Justintime says but they are different products and it depends on your business; if you frame in expensive hardwoods a Hoffman would be nice to have. If your core business is framing family photos, posters and artwork in typically flat black pre-finished mouldings then use an unde...

Re: Chop saw thoughts
All the chop saws I've seen the motor directly drives the blade so any play is in the motor bearings. Do the older proper machines separate the motor and blade?

Chop saw thoughts
I noticed Brevetti mentioned in another thread and this prompted me to post For some mouldings I use my chop saw, always oak and some mouldings where the back doesn't cut cleanly etc. it is a 25 year old Makita with the finest blade I could find, I am thinking of updating my setup with maybe a new s...

Re: Large jigsaw suggestions
Don't worry about it, sometimes people like the idea of a framing job but are unrealistic about the cost. The important thing is to be diligent in your quoting but at the same time don't waste too much time

Re: Large jigsaw suggestions
Tudor Rose's method is very similar to how I would do it, you need to consider whether you want to get involved with the transport, you could maybe do it yourself, ask a favour, hire a van or decline, saying 'quite happy to do the framing but you would need to deliver to me and collect' As framing i...
