Do you know this?

Post by MarkScrivens »

Can you offer your years of experience and help me identify this cutter.
I purchased it with a job lot of motorcycle sidecar parts, whilst collecting them from the owners garage I noticed this on the floor - I did not pay a lot for it, so I thought it was worth a go. Any help with the make/model would be appreciated.

it looks like a desk top mitre cutter... something but not exactly like this.. http://scosarg.com/morso-b-mitre-guillotine-bench.html

You got a bargain for free there...!

it does look very Morso-ish. Colour and looks like it weighs a ton!

I have seen one of these before in a men in sheds workshop, I recall it had a label on it indicating it had come from Lion. I didn't use it but those who had seemed happy with it's performance, it was not being used in a professional capacity.

It's a mitre trimmer. In this particular instance it looks like an older model from the days when they were still made in europe, but I suspect that they now probably all are made in China.

Judging by the colour of the paint, it could easily be a morso product, but I don't know if Morso even produced mitre trimmers, so it might not be from them at all!

Charnwood sell something similar.

So do Axminster.

Thanks for the replies, it does appear well made, so not a toy. The blades look extreamly like Morso (if not Morso) but there is no name or number on the frame. I do not see that I would use it, however it may be good for filets and fine work.

I am just looking to identify this bit of kit so any help appreciated.

These things are for truing up mitres and very handy for that purpose, but they are not mitre cutters as such. You can't chop though a length of moulding, only shave the ends. A woodworker would rough cut a mitre a bit oversize and use the cutter to nibble it to fit. Very good for fitting trims and such to cabinets and wotnot. No reason no to use it for picture frames, but it would be a long-winded exercise compared to a 'proper' Morso.
