Home depot is slightly far away btw but point taken, not sure if I fancy doing a DIY job, I'd probably mess things up & time isn't something I have a lot of at the moment.
I had one of these cables fail on a CS-79 some years ago. When examined it I found that the pulleys were not revolving freely and the friction has caused the weakening of the cable. It's well worth checking this and if necessary relubricating the sleeve bearings with some Molykote GN paste.
