Mounting query
Mounting query
I've been asked to frame a deckled edge water colour (original), mounted on a foam board (5mm thick approx.) and cut an inch or so smaller than the profile of the painting so that the latter appears to be 'floating'. This will then be framed in with a deep section moulding. As I've not used this method of framing before, what is the recommended way to attach the artwork to the foam backing?
The board that the painting is attached to is not visible, so it does not have to be foamboard.
You could mount the painting on to mountboard and then mount that mountboard on to foam board.
Pass-through hinges would work - ('S' hinges) whether through the foamboard or matboard adhered to foam board.
Depending on the weight of the paper, the unattached edge could be a problem. I'd get the board as close to the edge of the paper as I could without being visible - bevel the board away from the paper and you can get very close to the edge of it with that 5mm space without it being visible.
I'd go for about a quarter of an inch difference in size between mounting board and paper - i.e. one eigth of an inch all round.
