Foamboard dust

Post by dcowan100 »

Hi everyone. I've been fortunate to work with a boxer and have recently framed gloves, shorts and cape. They're all substantial frames and have constructed ply box frames to house them.

To create a tray to sit the pieces in, I have made boxes out of 5mm foamboard. These are substantial enough but I'm finding that there can be a fair bit of dust from the cut edge of the foamboard. I often cut them with my gunnar but the edges do sometimes look a little ragged.

I've tried to combat this with ph70 wrapped over the cut edge but I'm not completely happy with the 'tightness' that can be achieved with the tape.

Does any have any practical solutions ?

Which foam board?

I used foam board spacers big time and never had this problem.

It was always either Nielsen’s Artcare or Larson juhl.

I used to use a lot of black foamboard for spacers too, and that would have been a nightmare with your problem.

If it’s not the quality of board then maybe it’s blade sharpness, but this is a new one to me.

Thanks John, .

I change the gunnar blades (far too) regularly when cutting that way but have also had problems using a scalpel and Stanley knife

I'll try the nielsen FB. Perhaps the quality is the issue

I have often had the same issue. It seems to be hit n miss if it happens or not. Have you tried white gummed paper hinging tape rather than self adhesive ph70 to wrap the foamboard? I think you'll find it easier to get a clean finish.
Have you tried the "acid free" foamboard which has a much nicer face paper akin to conservation mountboard face papers?
