Hi All
I’m pretty frustrated! I don’t often use a chop service unless it’s a moulding that is quite large and I will need more than one length and then waste the rest. I also have limited space to cut so it seems sensible to use it on occasion.
Two items recently have arrived which suited the Bamboo mouldings so I ordered the chop service for both as I also felt due to their profile, it would be easier to get a proper chop done instead of me screwing it up (impostor syndrome kicking in here!)
So delivery arrived and I got them out of packaging only to discover they had chopped on both sets, three pieces on the dip of the ridge and one on the knobbly bit so joins are completely wrong and one side is proud. I rang Lion and sent photos to prove. So reluctantly they agreed to replace but only after an email exchange whereby they stated it was a difficult size and perhaps I should rethink using this moulding!! And yet three pieces worked fine!
My replacements arrived today. Another set of four pieces per moulding. And again they are cut wrong so joins are going to be impossible. So now what? Of course I could cut down the long pieces but I’m actually pretty annoyed! I feel these guys doing the chopping are just being slap dash and not giving any thought to it. But the customer service woman was not over friendly with me. But I have paid for a service! This is the second time I have had shoddy work from them. Last time, I was sent warped moulding which again they were “surprised” by and could it have happened in my studio? (I hadn’t even taken out of the box!
Advice please!

Re: Chop service Lion
I think what you're looking for is a bespoke chop of the moulding so as to best fit your frame.
What Lion probably do is supply chop mouldings on a simple production basis, where the operator simply chops off the next section on a given length.
To have him chop into the moulding so that all four corners matched up would create a degree of wastage which they wouldn't have budgeted for.
What they should have done, however, is explained that to you and sugested a compromise where they would offer the bespoke service you needed but at a slightly higher and agreed price.

You could also ask for oversize pieces - so just order bigger than you need - then trim them to the right size, allowing yourself to match up corners more easily.
Clearly that only works on moulding you can put in your Morso, or are happy to cut, but we've used that where we don't want to keep stock of the moulding.

Re: Chop service Lion
My mistake clearly. I thought a chop service being double the price actually meant that I would have usable pieces....

The extra time it takes to match cut these kind of profiles is not something I'd expect a chop supplier to expend. The higher price is due to the labour and wastage charge that otherwise you would be charging your customer for directly.
It's not any easy profile to match and honestly I think their advice was right. If you're not prepared to cut it yourself then I'd ditch it from your range.

On mouldings with non linear running ornaments it's very hard to get the corners to 'match' I think you are maybe
asking a bit much. The pattern repeats over a certain length and you really have to make the rails equally divisible
in length to the repeat length. On bamboo this could mean a big jump. If you see a raw end you can make it better
by careful shaping/filling and touching up.
It can get very complicated.
But, Bamboo being a natural look you would not expect the pattern to continue
around a corner on the real thing.
