arriving today, but mother might have fractured her wrist in a fall last night, she got turned into a mountboard sandwich, went flying across the room and landed awkwardly.
god knows how me and only one our female members of staff are going to get it off the van...
the other one is taking the day off.

She might have done that on purpose to get out of lifting the CMC off the truck and carrying it inside!Mary Case GCF wrote:arriving today, but mother might have fractured her wrist in a fall last night,

Seriously, Mary, I hope you haven't done much damage to your wrist and I hope you recover quickly.
Its an awkward couple of boxes - normally on a pallet - I couldn't get it through my door so had to unpack it and take it into workshop in pieces.
Are Simon's coming to put it together? In my case (Peregrine) just came and checked settings - I had assembled it by the time they arrived - not particularly difficult as most of its just flat pack level assembly. Stand has to be assembled - bed and cutting mechanism comes in one piece ready assembled - so in reality your only assembling the stand and bolting the bed to the top of it.
I recently purchased a 24" monitor for my home pc - thinking of getting another for the pc running the valiani as the one running it is on its way out. I can run the cutting software on one side of the screen - and bring up the EST job information on the other side.
Couple of tips
when you have set up all the cutting parameters print out screen grabs of the settings and keep them safe in a folder with your manuals. If for any reason something goes wrong its easy just to check all settings by comparing the saved views.
If your machine has the same depth setting mechanism as mine - a calibrated knob on top of the blade housing paint a small brightly coloured spot on the side of the knob. Do this so that when you are sat at the keyboard you can just glance at the settings knob - if you see the coloured dot in the right place for standard cutting depth you know that its ok to hit the start button - if its not visible then you probably have it set for a deep cut - and if you only have one piece of board on the cutter you will be cutting into stuff that you dont want to cut.
With ref to above - I use two sheets of board as a cutting mat. If you set the blade depth too deep - it doesn't carve up the bed of the machine. The machine needs to be calibrated with two sheets of mat in place.
I am sure you will really enjoy using your new Valiani.

Mark,
I read your post about setting up the CMC and wonder if you mean two sheets under the mat being cut or does that include the sheet being cut???
Surely the blade doesn't protrude so far that it would cut right through the sheet under the one being cut???
With Gunnar CMC's the blade only cuts through the mat being cut and makes a tiny, tiny cut into the slip mat.

Unless you're really daft & leave the 3mm blade in when cutting a 1.5mm board - never done it, but it could happen. Mind you I normally have 2 sheets of cheap 1.5mm mountboard as a slip mat (it helps the clamps get a better grip than a single sheet) when cutting normal board, so it still wouldn't hit the bed.osgood wrote:With Gunnar CMC's the blade only cuts through the mat being cut and makes a tiny, tiny cut into the slip mat.
The Valiani blade depth is adjustable - its fairly easy to leave it on the deeper setting if your interrupted - my little red spot on the settings dial is a nice visual check before hitting the start button.
If your cutting a double mount on a Gunnar do you have to stop and change blades for the outside cut?

Thanks for your concern everyone. had the wrist checked out. luckily it is just a sprain, but it is sore I can tell you. been told not to rest it, but to use it. think i'll take it easy today. doing light duties, like making the tea. living on painkillers. if it is just a strain, should heal within a week. if there are any torn ligaments, it could be up to 6 weeks. let's hope it is the former. thank goodness it wasn't a break. that would have put me completely out of action for a while. just as well i have Grahame and my other staff otherwise i would have been up sh*t creek without the proverbial, like i was when i broke my elbow. excuse the typing. working left-handed and single-handed. can't do the capitals.
grahame's in his element, setting up the compressor and the computer desk. i think we'll leave the cmc until joe gets here. getting it off the lorry was fun
luckily my plumber was here and he got roped into helping. i just stood by and watched. sometimes it comes in handy being helpless
also ordered a new tapestry stretcher. been lost without one, so we've had a play of that. getting bored now. no customers and nothing i can do safely with one hand. think i'll make another cuppa.

Found out the other day why Wizard recommend two sheets under the one being cut.osgood wrote: I read your post about setting up the CMC and wonder if you mean two sheets under the mat being cut or does that include the sheet being cut???
I tried cutting a piece of board that was too small - I made a mistake when measuring it. The knife went off the edge of the board it was cutting just as the head was about to rotate. The result was that it bent the blade which tore through both of the backing sheets bit didn't touch the aluminium table.
With only one sheet underneath I guess it would have made quite a mess of the table.
