Passe Partout tape - modern equivalent?

Bit of a sticky problem has come in that we need some help with please.

A customer has brought in a display box/cabinet containing a stuffed duck. The cabinet was bespoke made to fit the duck, with a diorama made as part of the cabinet with sticks, twigs, leaves and things - so the cabinet has to stay as it is and cannot be remade or changed in any way.

The problem is that the piece of glass at the front has been broken and the customer wants this replaced.

Broken glass - replace with new - no problem.
Problem is, how to get it to fit back in to where the original glass was.

The original glass face was held onto the glass sides with passe partout tape, which went out of fashion over 20-30 years ago and having googled it, it would seem the last rolls were sold in the late 1980s.

So my question is - does anyone have any suggestion as to what tape we can use that would do the same job as passe partout tape (it was matt black colour) or does anyone know where we can get a trim that is no bigger than 6mm right angle?

Sorry to sound ignorant but what are Mylar strips, and where do you get them from?

I think you're in the wrong topic Juliet, but anyway .....

Mylar, or melinex is clear archival polyester film and comes in several thicknesses in sheets, envelopes, rolls and other forms and is available from Preservation Equipment Ltd (PEL) or Conservation By Design.

It's 'straps' really; not 'strips' and they are usually cut from a roll - it's extremely versatile stuff, do a search for melinex or mylar here, or especially, On The Grumble.

The Lion tape is fine for framing purposes, but is not the same as the old-style passe partout tape, which ceased manufacture in 1989. This was a gummed paper tape, with a stippled/patterned front. Water was applied to make the tape ready for sticking to the glass and backing of the picture. This kind of tape is now impossible to find as far as I am aware.
