Re: framing courses
What about Pete Bingham in Sheffield is that close enough?
Re: framing courses
Do you want the full treatment or just enough to frame your own work? No point in learning the ins and outs of needlework, 3D object stuff if you are never going to practice them.
Speaking of the Bingster, there is a great book by himself called Picture Framing: A Practical Guide to to all Aspects of the Art and Craft.
Have a look on Amazzon. It does what it says on the can.
You will get a good grounding by reading though that and anything else is mostly fine-tuning.

Re: framing courses
Have a look at your local adult education classes, you might find they run a course.
I did one at my local school last year, 2 hours a week for 5 or 6 weeks. It cost virtually nothing and gave me a bit of a starting point. On the last day, the tutor mentioned that a local art gallery had approached him asking if anyone wanted to do some work experience with him. I worked there free for 3 months and learned basic framing, but unfortunately as no money was on offer, I had to move on.

Re: framing courses
I know a lot of people on here look down their nose at DIY Framing, but they do some reasonable courses showing you the basics. I know a few framers who started with them. I think they have some courses in Manchester in October.

Re: framing courses
DIY Framing do what they say on the tin. If you want to run a professional framing shop look elsewhere, DIY framing will give you a good grounding using 'hobbyist' equipment.
I have been on several of their courses whilst I was still a hobby framer. The methods they use are generally sound. The equipment is hobby / DIY standard -produce good frames but not quick enough to make it profitable.
I have progressed onto professional equipment but still use some of the methods I was taught on their courses.

Re: framing courses
Jordec,
I suggest you come along to this on Wed. in Manchester
There will be a lot of framers and others you can ask any questions you want.
Also Pete Bingham will be there - he was suggested above.
