Card Machine recommendations please
Good morning all. I am trying to find a credit / debit card terminal that is cheaper than our Forrester Holdings / Lloyd’s cardnet set up. I’ve looked at izettle & a couple of others, but none seem to allow me to take card payments over the phone. Some of my customers don’t want to use PayPal so phone payments are important to us. Any suggestions would be welcome please. Thanks

We've just moved over the Handepay / EVO payments - with a traditional card terminal (which can do 'phone payments). They gave us a much better deal than our current provider (FDMS).

You can take card payments ovet the phone using the PayPal Here iOS app or the Virtual terminal via a browser. No need for a terminal, the customer will be unaware that you are using PayPal as a payments processor. I use it all the time.

I take card payments over the phone with my square up reader and app. Its been great. You can use it wherever there is WiFi, so take a payment when delivering work etc

Hi GeoSpectrum. PayPal Here iOS looks interesting, but I can’t see anything about taking payments over the phone though. Doesn’t the customer have to enter a PIN number ? I know I can phone PayPal tomorrow, but I’m itching to find out haha ! Val

Re: Card Machine recommendations please
I used to use the Paypal card payment machine but came away from them when they started messing about by withholding payment even after it had been previously approved, also they do keep a record of card numbers and once the customers card has been used so many times they insist on a Paypal account being opened before processing any future payments - so be aware.
I now use a card payment reader by iZettle and so far the are pretty good.

Re: Card Machine recommendations please
Thanks for that heads-up on PayPal Mark. I thought of switching at one point but something
told me there might be complications.
My setup may not be the cheapest deal, but I've never had bother with it and I always say "If it ain't broke don't mend it".
I did try switching recently so I could tack the card account onto my phone/broadband account. But in the process they got so
many things wrong on the contract (including my phone no.) that in the end I told them to stuff it.
Then I rang my existing
provider and upgraded my terminal to a wireless one.
I don't begrudge the cost. It's better than driving to the bank with a cheque whichever way you slice it.

https://www.mobiletransaction.org/sumup-review/
I use Sumup. 1.69% for each and every transaction. No other costs after buying the terminal. The above web link is review of Sumup and gets you the terminal fo £19.
Over the phone transactions are now possible (not tried myself yet) the fee for this type of transaction is nearer the 3% per transaction.
No contract, no problem
Someone mentioned iZettel, they seem good as well. Barcelona football club use this system, all the staff had terminal.

Re: Card Machine recommendations please
Been using PayPal for 5 years now and push about £35k annually though it, I've had zero problems, mostly website payments and over the phone payments, using the iOS app and the virtual terminal. It's best to have a Paypal business acount I believe. That said I quite like the look of square and might run it in parallel to see how it works out. The rates are slightly better (2.5 vs 2.9%).

With all these apps and mobile terminals, when paying over the phone, are you PCI compliance , have you had your phone lines scanned every 3 months

Re: Card Machine recommendations please
We don't store any payment details, the app remembers email details from the card for receipts but that's it, so GDPR, but not PCI I'm assuming..
