Cutting an old frame down to size.
After taking the old frame apart and removing all the pins etc, before chopping, check for hidden ironmongery using one of those Combined Metal, Voltage And Stud Detectors , available in most good DIY shops.

Just bought one of those to help with placement of a huge mirror! I say just, it was 3 weeks ago, I still haven't got round to that job
Still, as you say, it'll be of use to prevent chips in the blades.

Someone once asked me to cut down a 20x30 into two frames 20x15. he took some convincing that it was not possible.

But surely you remember that old children's party trick of turning four matchsticks into seven?
