Institute of British Frame Makers

Post by birdman »

Just been reading the Yellow Pages as I've been asked to renew my entry and I noticed that one of the Picture Framing businesses claims they are a member of the Institute of British Frame Makers. Now I have never heard of them and haven't found anything on Google. Is anyone here a member or does anyone know anything about this organisation?

Could it be that the Institute of British Frame Makers has only the one, founding, member?

Winner of the Institute of British Framers "Framer of the Year" for 32 years running perhaps...

Another good one anybody can put on their website is "The UK's leading picture framer". If you are an honest type you just need a tenuous explanation like stocking the largest variety of D-rings anywhere, or being the first framer on eBay.

They have done well to rack up over 20 years of experience since being established in 1978 though - good luck to them

Another obscure one - the IFFA - Independent Fine Framers Association - Google that and you'll find a couple of framers claiming to be members, one even has a logo, but no IFFA website.

we haven't finished yet, David ;)
I quote this:
In the United Kingdom the title 'Institute' is a protected word and companies or other organisations may only use that word if they are "organisations which are carrying out research at the highest level or to professional bodies of the highest standing".

Framing Academy, anyone?

Well now we finally know who's been awarding the Master Picture Framer title. Glad we could get that cleared up.

It is true, I do have a WC.

I would be careful of ‘made up’ trade organisations. Any old idiot can make up a bogus association on a whim, design a logo and claim to be the number one member...

I was chairman of the Anarchist's Society, but no one would obey the rules so I expelled them all. :P

So, this Institute of British Frame Makers - apart from mising the word 'Picture' out, as there are many types of frame besides picture frames ..... and apart from abusing the word 'Institute' .... has only the one 'member' who does not even live in Great Britain.
