Framers in Vancouver Island?
Hi all
We are heading to Vancouver Island, British Columbia (home exchange) next week and hope to visit some of the local framers. Are any of the framers there known to Forum members? We enjoy visiting other framers and seeing how they are doing. Usually it’s about the same as us, very reassuring. Mostly we are doing our best and not making much money!!!!!
Anyway, any suggestions welcomed.

Excellent Frameworks in Duncan is well worth a visit.
But as someone said - its a big island!
IMHO experience framers are easy to find when you are there, they are not hiden in back streets, but "in your face" in prime high street locations. You walk along any good high street and you are sure to pass a frame shop.
And even if you are not interested in flowers and trees - try and visit The Butchant Gardens - www.butchantgardens.com It's a wonderful place.

Keith,
Bit of a typo there...it should read "Butchart"......no "n"......"r" instead!

From memory these are some places I would visit again.
The murals on buildings in Chemainus.
Craigdarroch castle in Victoria.
The Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria.
The Crystal Garden in Victoria had those tiny little south American monkeys when we were there in 96. Also blue macaws - awesome!
There's plenty to do & see in that part of the world!

We're lucky enough to live next door to Butchart Gardens. What'll grow there will grow in our garden. The Crystal Gardens have gone now. Everything else is still there though!

Re: Framers in Vancouver Island?
Hi all,
And thank you for the replies to my original post. We arrived on Vancouver Island on Wednesday and enjoying ourselves very much indeed, Such a beautiful place. We have been into a couple of framing shops (I am always nosy) and one thing I noticed is that here most unframed stretched canvases have a black tape around the edges. It looks very neat and seems to give a good finish. I did ask about it in one place, but got rather a vague reply. Does anyone know what the tape is and what is the general opinion on it?
Thanks in advance.,
Anne

Re: Framers in Vancouver Island?
Personally, I wouldn't use tape on the edge because it will most likely begin to part company with the canvas at some time and look bad. Then the customer will begin to whine at you.
Don't like sticky stuff on artwork either.

Hello everyone,
And I thought you were asking about the famous on Vancouver Island - now I see that it's just framers
Anyway, thanks Keith for the mention. We would be happy to be visited and then I can let you in on the secret of the black tape and "canvas transfers" and give you a tour of the frameshop (no secrets here!). If you plan on a trip to Duncan and the Cowichan Valley I would suggest Wednesday through Saturday so you can also visit local wineries which are usually closed Monday and Tuesday.

PS Keith's link was to a very (VERY) old webpage - I think I made that when Windows was 3.1 and Netscape ruled!
