Velvet backing for showing off medals
Hi,
I wanted to source some suitable velvet fabric, black, blue, green and maroon probably, I haven't done alot of medals put thought that they'd look nice laying on velvet.
The alternative I thought might be some of that suedette mountboard from Arqadia ? I'd be interested to know what anyone else uses ?
With thanks,
Adam/Bagpuss

Re: Velvet backing for showing off medals
hi adam - we use velveteen for all our backing - we only keep 3 colours to keep things simple - midnight or dark blue (naval medals) crimson (army) air force blue (ait force)
http://www.porterforster.co.uk/companydetails.htm
they also trade as porter valmic
we also use their own brand name spray adhesive for sticking the velveteen down.
i havn't tried it but the arqadia board looks quite good too
hope this helps

As above , i have used a local(ish) fabric store a few times........mostly navy blue for police medals.......and again as above they sold their own heavy duty fabric adhesive which worked a treat.........i cut the holes out of 5mm foamcore then simply stuck the velvet on, waited for it to dry and the medals just recessed in

We have used Arqadia Suedette for quite a few years now and I think it looks pretty good. I used to dry mount suede fabric onto board but the bits of loose fabric from the cut edge of the fabric used to get everywhere.

Re: Velvet backing for showing off medals
I use Arqadia Suedette for medals all the time, good range of colours for the different forces / regiments and no messing with adhesives and cuts well.
I woulds post a photo but I can't get it to resize, DOH, but if you look at my website you'll see a couple of examples that use Suedette.

Re: Velvet backing for showing off medals
May I ask how you fix the medals into/onto the mounts?
Thanks

These 3 medals are sunk into the velvet, which is stuck onto foamcore......these were easy to do this way as they dont have any ribbons and they were to match the way they came in the presentation boxes.......not very good pics though

The ribbons are put through slits in the bottom mount and I then run a strip of mountboard through them (on the back just to secure). You should have 49mm (I think) of ribbon showing and the medals should be displayed in the correct order.vividP wrote:May I ask how you fix the medals into/onto the mounts?

The actual medals are held in place with a mylar spiders, ala Robo.

This looks really effective, thanks for posting the pics, I like it because it's a modern display of the medals, I've only ever seen military ones displayed in a more traditional fashion, this looks really slick, nice oneeasypopsgcf wrote:These 3 medals are sunk into the velvet, which is stuck onto foamcore......these were easy to do this way as they dont have any ribbons and they were to match the way they came in the presentation boxes.......not very good pics though

Re: Velvet backing for showing off medals
one set i did had no clips on them so i cut very narrow windows in a piece of mountcard 2-3mm and just wider than the ribbon, then the material was glued to the card, when it was dry i cut the material at the slots with a scalpel and the ends of the ribbon were passed through,as they were all sewn they made a loop at the back of the card which i passed through a piece of cord that i had dipped in varnish and left to dry for several days, either end was taped and they all hung at a uniform height,i used fuse wire or copper wire then to fix the loops of the medals through the card, worked really well and easy to take them out if needed, did a similar thing with my old mans medals but his had the clips on so it was just a case of tweaking the size of the slot to fit
